I.M.A.M. Joins Interfaith Open Letter Against Anti-Muslim Bigotry
The Imam Mahdi Association of Marjaeya (I.M.A.M.) has joined a nationwide interfaith initiative calling for an end to anti-Muslim bigotry in U.S. political discourse. The initiative, organized by the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign, centers on an open letter released on September 9, 2026, under the title “Anti-Muslim Bigotry from Political Leaders is Dangerous and Should Not Be Tolerated: For the Love of God—and of Our Neighbor—It Must End Now.” The letter was publicly launched on Capitol Hill with the support of more than 200 faith leaders and over 70 religious organizations.
The letter expresses serious concern over the escalation of anti-Muslim rhetoric by elected officials, including misrepresentations of Islam and Sharia, portrayals of Muslims as a threat, and calls for discriminatory measures affecting Muslim immigrants and citizens. It warns that normalizing such rhetoric can contribute to harassment, attacks on mosques, targeted violence, and a growing sense of fear and insecurity among Muslim communities and others who may be perceived as Muslim.
At the same time, the letter emphasizes principles that extend beyond any single religious community. Its signatories affirm universal human dignity, freedom of religion and expression, equality, and the responsibility of people of faith to defend the rights and well-being of others, including those who do not share their faith or identity. They also explicitly acknowledge that they may disagree on various domestic and international issues, while affirming that opposition to anti-Muslim bigotry and the defense of human dignity and religious freedom for all constitute shared commitments that transcend those differences.
By joining this initiative, I.M.A.M. stands alongside a diverse group of religious leaders, faith communities, and organizations committed to challenging anti-Muslim discrimination and other forms of religious bigotry. This participation reflects I.M.A.M.’s continuing commitment to protecting human dignity, advancing religious freedom, promoting peaceful coexistence, and strengthening cooperation across religious and community lines.
The full open letter and additional information about the initiative are available on the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign’s website. The updated list of signatories includes the Imam Mahdi Association of Marjaeya (I.M.A.M.) as No. 40 among the participating organizations.
